Soda firing is a vapour-glazing processes where soda ash (sodium carbonate), or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is introduced into the kiln at a high temperature. The soda vaporizes, and sodium binds to the silica in the clay surface, forming a hard, glassy glaze with varying colours and textures.
This small batch series from this spring has a liner glaze on the inside and was unglazed on the outside when they entered the kiln. The outside glaze is a result of soda vapours melting to the clay and forming glassy coating of glaze.
