Soda firing is a vapour-glazing processes where soda ash (sodium carbonate), or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is introduced into the kiln at a high temperature. The soda vaporizes, and sodium binds to the silica in the clay surface, forming a hard, glassy glaze with varying colours and textures.
This small batch series from spring firings is glazed with a classic celadon, highlighted by smoky grey textures of soda vapour, and creating a beautiful crackle.
This yunomi (湯のみ) is a taller form of a Japanese teacup with no handle, in contrast with a teabowl which is lower and wider.
