Soda firing is a vapour-glazing processes where soda ash (sodium carbonate), or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is introduced into the kiln at a high temperature. The soda vaporizes, and sodium binds to the silica in the clay surface, forming a hard, glassy glaze with varying colours and textures.
This small batch series from Spring 2025 firings is glazed with a "yellow-salt" glaze, which interacts beautifully with the soda environment creating mostly matte yellow with shiny greys and whites around rims.
A yunomi (湯のみ) is a tall form of a Japanese teacup with no handle, in contrast with a teabowl which is lower and wider. This yunomi was wheel-thrown with a rounded form and then altered to be somewhat squared.
