ADAPT TEA (Sheng Mai San (生脉散) is a traditional Chinese herbal formula that has been used for centuries to tonify the Qi, nourish Yin, and generate fluids and overall strengthen a weak immune system.

It is commonly used today to strengthen immune system with concurrent conditions such as:

  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue, and dry mouth [1, 2]
  • Yin deficiency during menopause

Two of the herbs in this formula, Ginseng and Schisandra, are adaptogen herbs commonly used to

  • support adrenal function* [1, 2]
  • help the body adapt to stress*  [1, 2]
  • strengthen immune system*  [1, 2, 3]

Ginseng (Rén Shēn 人參 Panax ginseng) is one of the most-used herbs globally to strengthen the immune system.  It has been shown in studies to have anti-stress and anti-fatigue effects, as well as to support the adrenal glands [1, 2]. Ginseng contains ginsenosides, which are believed to be responsible for its adaptogenic properties. Ginseng may also improve cognitive function and reduce inflammation.

Schisandra (Wǔ Wèi Zi 五味子), also known as Schisandra chinensis, is another adaptogenic herb that is believed to support adrenal function. Schisandra is thought to work by helping to regulate the production of stress hormones such as cortisol. It may also have antioxidant properties and be beneficial for liver function. [3]

SOURCE TEXT

The formula was first recorded in the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) in the book "Yi Zong Jin Jian" (《医宗金鉴》) by the physician Wu Qian, who based the formula on the teachings of the famous physician Li Dong-yuan from the Jin-Yuan dynasty (1115-1368), in which it is recommended for tonifying the Qi, nourishing Yin, and generating fluids, which are considered important in traditional Chinese medicine for supporting overall health and wellbeing.  Tonifying the body's essential substances in East Asian medicine are traditional ways to boost immune system.
