Reduction-fired celadon glazes have a long and rich history, originating in ancient China during the Eastern Han dynasty (circa 200 CE) and reaching their peak in the Song dynasty. These translucent, jade-like glazes are achieved by firing iron-rich red and yellow glazes in a reduction atmosphere, which limits oxygen in the kiln and changes the oxidation state of iron in the glaze, producing the characteristic green to blue hues. . In a soda kiln, the introduction of soda vapour interacts with both the glaze and the flame path, yielding unpredictable, expressive surfaces that distinguish them from more traditional celadon finishes. The soda vapourizes creating a glassy surface with beautiful crackle patterns. Further, smoky grey highlights appear on textures and edges from carbon-trapping where atmospheric carbon becomes trapped in the glaze surface
